Ashcroft objected to NSA spying

Aide testifies: While Ashcroft was recovering from gall bladder surgery he was pressured by then-White House chief of staff Andrew Card and then-White House Counsel Alberto (I don't recall) Gonzales, to approve the domestic spying program. Ahscroft objected, as did the aide, both threatening to resign.

Former aide described the visit as "an effort to take advantage of a very sick man"

Why do these people wait until now to speak up?
